Lately I’ve been asked a lot about succession planning – for both nonprofit boards and staff. So I was thrilled when I saw this compilation of information and resources from Wild Apricot!

50 Practical Tips For Succession Planning

Here are a few of my favorites:

#1 There is so much institutional knowledge in their head! And relationships are key to your work so taking the time to talk about what isn’t necessarily on paper is essential.

#6 Love it! You can learn so much in an exit interview. Let me know if you need some questions.

#17 – 20 Resources, tools and templates! Planning made easy for you.

#24 I don’t think you can over communicate when it comes to transition. Share your process, progress, results and bold vision! It’s a great opportunity to build enthusiasm.

#36 Be thorough. Patience is a virtue.

#50 Made me giggle. You can never start too early when it comes to building trust.

Bonus Tip from me:

The board is responsible for selecting a new CEO so be sure the outgoing CEO is not overly involved. The board is also responsible for selecting a new President, with input from the CEO. It’s a good idea to clarify roles up front so the expectations are clear.
